1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe
When our parents were married in 1949, they took their Plymouth Special Deluxe to La Jolla, CA. 25 years later they purchased this '49 Plymouth in remembrance of this time in their lives.
Our family has enjoyed parades & tooling around our prairie town on the mohair seats of our four door 1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe for about 25 years now. The 217.8 cu. in. 6 cylinder sedan with 3 manual sliding gears on the column has been garaged on our property during the entire time we have owned the car. Plymouth introduced the 1949 line as "The Great New Plymouth" as their restyled bodies had thoroughly redesigned exteriors in classy colors. The original green patina on our vehicle has few rust or blemish marks-except those fitting to such a great lady. Literature from the Plymouth factory boasted "A more powerful 97 horsepower engine...higher 7 to 1 compression ratio and a new intake manifold." The 3 speed transmission features synchromesh on second and third gears. Plymouth called the four-wheel hydraulic drum system, "Safe-Guard" brakes and the tires on 4.5 inch steel rims were called "Super Cushion." 70+ years later, this '49er is still a Great New Plymouth.
